As a way to spend an idle summer afternoon along Colorado’s Front Range, nothing beats sipping a Lariat Lodge Hiwan Hefewizen while enjoying the valley view from their hilltop deck. This Hefeweizen contains all of the tasty components of the traditional German brew, while the taproom’s prime location offers a mountain-like getaway close to Denver.
Colorado Version of a German Classic
Visually, Lariat Lodge Hiwan Hefeweizen differs slightly from the traditional German version. The straw-colored liquid is more hazy than opaque, and the head is low to non-existent. The nose has a distinctly yeasty aroma with the expected notes of banana and subtle clove.
As the subdued head suggests, Hiwan Hefeweizen comes out low on carbonation. However that doesn’t detract from enjoying sips of the usual Hefeweizen flavors. Lariat’s version comes across very clove-forward, with mild banana and fruity notes in the background. One surprise is the heavy malt base vs. the normal wheat-forward focus. However, it works well as a counterbalance to the strong flavors from the yeast phenols.
In the big picture, Lariat Lodge Hiwan Hefeweizen is less subtle and more flavor-forward than most German Hefeweizens and in my opinion a thoroughly enjoyable brew. That said, this style of beer can be polarizing. Hefe-lovers will appreciate the way Lariat’s savory presentation doubles down on summery goodness. However Hefe-sceptics will likely find it a little overwhelming.
Cool Off in the Hills
Regardless of which style brew you prefer, Lariat Lodge’s Evergreen, CO, location offers an outstanding opportunity to trade the heat of mid-summer Denver for the cool of the foothills. The brewery sits on a slope showcasing beautiful views of evergreen-covered hills and valleys. The wrap-around deck is a great place to watch hummingbirds buzz by, afternoon thunderstorms roll in and occasionally even a migrating elk herd.
Whether you’re looking to relax in cooler temps or heading back from mountain activities, it’s worth stopping at Lariat Lodge for both the atmosphere and a Hiwan Hefeweizen or one of Lariat’s other brews, if those are more your taste.
